FAQ
Common questions
Does jPen require installation?
No. jPen is a portable application. On Windows, just run the .exe. On macOS, open the DMG and drag to Applications. On Linux, make the AppImage executable and run it.
Does jPen work on touchscreens and interactive TVs?
Yes. TV Mode has larger buttons and icons for projectors and large displays. Compact Mode reduces the footprint for smaller screens. High-Contrast Mode provides a black background with white icons for accessibility.
What is the difference between Free and Pro?
Free gives you all annotation tools (pen, shapes, text, eraser, select, move, pointer, table), teaching presets, subject colour palettes, TV/Compact/High-Contrast modes, and 1 whiteboard tab. Pro adds the template library (20+ SVG templates), unlimited whiteboard tabs, save/open .jpen sessions, PDF export, and screen recording.
What are Teaching Presets?
Four built-in presets — Math, Science, Language, and General — configure the toolbar, colour palette, templates, and keyboard shortcuts for each subject in one click. Your chosen preset persists across sessions. You can also save your own custom presets.
Can I use jPen on 2 computers?
Yes. Each Pro licence allows 2 device activations. You can deactivate a machine at any time from the customer portal to free up a slot.
Is this a subscription?
No. jPen Pro is a one-time payment. You own the licence permanently and receive all v3.x updates for free.
What smoothing levels are available for the pen?
Four levels: None, Low, Medium, and High. The pen uses a three-stage pipeline — point reduction, weighted averaging, and Catmull-Rom spline interpolation — so even Low produces noticeably cleaner strokes than a raw input.
Does screen recording capture annotations?
Yes. jPen draws directly on a transparent overlay window, so all annotations are captured in the video naturally — no post-processing needed. Recordings are saved as MP4/WebM directly from the app.
What happens if I am offline?
jPen works fully offline. The licence is validated online once when activated, then cached locally. If you have been online within the past 14 days, the app works with no network connection at all.
Can I save and share my whiteboard sessions?
Yes. Pro users can save sessions as .jpen files and reopen them later. You can also export any multi-page session as a PDF to share with students instantly.
